Teaching Invaluable Skills

The Easterseals Pre-Employment Training opportunity is to assist people with disabilities in the development of appropriate work skills and behaviors necessary for securing and maintaining employment. Everyone starts in a classroom setting but soon moves up to practicing their skills in a production environment in a small group! Kendricka Smith, a client of this program explains her excitement for her future:

“I enjoy Easterseals because you can be yourself and meet new friends. I like learning new jobs in the shop. I'm excited to learn skills that will help me get a job in the community!"

The program emphasizes 11 Basic Work Habits such as attendance, punctuality, grooming/hygiene, work quality, work pace, supervisor and co-worker relations, safety, etc.  Trainees must be 16 years of age or older, have a medically determined disability, possess basic self-help skills and present no danger to themselves or others. Bailey Brewton, Program Supervisor, speaks on her experience:

“Watching people grow through the program is an honor I get to witness firsthand. Each person develops their own strengths and is working towards an empowered future.”

Trainees are provided real work experience through a variety of contracts with local businesses including in the plant shop at Easterseals Middle Georgia. Best of all, in their opinion, is that they get a paycheck! This allows them to be productive and active in society, a gift that many only can dream of.
